JUNIOR SCHOOL: YEAR 5

Year 5 marks the start of the ‘Apart’ phase of our Together-Apart-Together model from Years 5 – 9, providing tailored support and space for open discussion at this important stage of development. It is also a key intake year, with new students joining the School as friendships expand and interests broaden.

Through literacy, numeracy and humanities learning, students will be encouraged to think deeply, develop new skills and make meaningful connections to the world around them. Learning is further enhanced by our specialist classes in Chinese language and culture, performing arts, physical education, science, technologies, and visual arts.

Classroom Location

The Junior School is comprised of the Eblana building (Building E) and the Don Ingram Building (Building I).

  • Our Year 5A, B & C students are located on the Ground Floor of Building I.
  • Our Year 5D students are located on the First Floor of Building I.
  • The Junior School Admin Office is located on the Ground Floor of Building E.

Learning Journeys & Experiential Learning

Sovereign Hill/Cave Hill Creek (Term 1)
To enrich their classroom learning in humanities, students spend two nights in Term 1 visiting historic Sovereign Hill and Cave Hill Creek exploring colonial life and the experiences of different groups in Australia’s past.

At the start of Term 4, each Year 5 class group will attend Shoreham, our fantastic three-hectare beachfront camp on the Mornington Peninsula as part of our Learning Journeys program of experiential learning. Swimming Program

All Year 5 students are involved in an intensive block of 10 lessons in Semester One (Terms 1 & 2), with further swimming and water safety opportunities in Semester Two (Terms 3 & 4) with the following key benefits:

  • Regular lessons in a block will help build skills quickly and will give confidence to their skills and abilities in and around water.
  • Students will gain this confidence more quickly given the recall of what they learned in the lesson before.
  • Continual repetition in this block of swimming increases muscle memory of their swimming skills and overall improvement across the weeks, which can lead to boosted enjoyment.

The second is the Junior Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) competition.

Major carnivals in athletics, cross country and swimming are held in both competitions, along with fun round robins and competitive team sport tournaments hosted throughout the year.
