STUDENT AWARDS & COLOURS PROCESS

The Mentone Grammar student awards process for Years 7 – 12 is a vital part of recognising and celebrating the achievements, dedication, and sense of purpose that each student brings to their academic, sporting, and cocurricular pursuits.

Acknowledging students for their hard work and commitment not only reinforces positive behavior and goal setting but also fosters a sense of pride and motivation. Through this process, we celebrate individual accomplishments, encourage continued personal growth, and strengthen our School’s culture of excellence. Recognising student achievements also serves as an inspiration to others and reinforces a number of important School Values including resilience, service, discipline and endeavour.

Awards Criteria

For a student to be considered for any award they must consistently exhibit behaviours in line with the School Values at all times.

In Years 7 – 12, student awards are separated into two categories:

  • Academic
  • Cocurricular

The criteria for each vary, most notably, that academic achievement is recognised by student effort and results within one calendar year, whereas cocurricular achievement is designed to be cumulative, building upon previous year’s achievements

Academic

Academic Awards recognise student achievement in one calendar year and are presented to students at Campus assemblies, at the end of year Awards Celebration Evening and the Valedictory Dinner. Specific criteria for this can be found via the links below and in the student diary.

Cocurricular

Students may be recognised for their commitment, skill, and leadership across the following areas:

  • Cadets (only awarded in Year 12)
  • Chess
  • Performing Arts (Dance, Drama and Music)
  • Public Speaking & Debating
  • Service
  • Sport (Summer, Winter and Spring seasons and eSports)
School Colours ‘Laureate Award’

Students in Year 12 who accumulate 24 points or more across a minimum of three cocurricular disciplines will be considered for the prestigious Laureate Award, presented at the Valedictory Dinner each year.

While our ultimate goal is for students to be intrinsically motivated to participate and excel, we recognise the importance of extrinsic recognition of effort and achievement in a young person’s life and so encourage our students to commit themselves fully to all that they pursue and to strive to always improve their abilities.

Recognition Levels

To recognise student commitment, skill, and leadership in our cocurricular program, students accumulate points over time. Cocurricular badges may first be achieved in Year 9 and recognise student achievement from Years 7 – 9. Upon achieving a badge, students may then be recognised with acknowledgement on their blazer pocket in Year 10, Half Colours in Year 11 and Full Colours in Year 12 for their ongoing commitment to their chosen cocurricular endeavour/s.

Special Provisions

While the system is based on continued participation from Year 7, there are special considerations for students who join the School from Years 9 – 11 who will still have the opportunity to be recognised for their achievements.

Awards Process

A team of staff track student involvement, gain feedback from coaches, program facilitators and support staff and regularly meet to determine award recipients.  This system is designed to alleviate any ambiguity and inconsistencies in recognition of student involvement and provide clarity on expectations and process.

All students have the right to appeal any award and should contact the Deputy Principal to commence this process.
