Summer Season

Saturday sport is compulsory for all students in Years 7 – 12.

Boys compete in the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) competition and girls in the combined AGSV/Associated Public Schools (APS) competition in both Summer and Winter sports.

Please find details of each sport below including training locations, equipment needed, uniform requirements and Saturday commitments. Note, some Firsts games may be held on Friday afternoons.

Summer Sport Training Days

Bus transport is provided from the School to all external venues for training sessions. Students train during Periods 5 & 6 on their allocated training day (see below). Depending on the sport, buses may depart from Lucerne Street, Venice Street, Warrigal Road or Como Parade.

Students should check the Clipboard app and/or Canvas for the exact session details. Those travelling by bus must arrive at the departure point by 1:05pm for a 1:15pm departure.

  • Tuesday: Years 7 & 8
  • Wednesday: Year 11
  • Thursday: Years 9 & 10

Please note that competition matches do not commence until Term 4.

Badminton (Girls)

About

Badminton is a racquet sport played indoors, where students rally a shuttlecock over a net, both in singles and in doubles.

Badminton Uniform and Equipment

Students participating in Saturday Badminton will need to purchase the Badminton sports uniform. Please refer to the AGSV/APS Uniform Guide, which can be found on the school’s uniform page:

www.mentonegrammar.net/enrolment/uniform

Students are required to bring their own badminton racquet to all trainings and matches.

Team Selection

Students will participate in Badminton during their allocated Year Level Sport time, where coaches will assess students and select teams based on their performance and development throughout these sessions.

Each Badminton team will consist of approximately 4–6 players, with each student playing a combination of singles and/or doubles matches throughout the season. Further information about the AGSV/APS regulations can be found here:

www.agsvsport.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Badminton-G-2026-SF.pdf

Saturday Sport Commitments

Saturday sport will resume on Saturday 24 October 2026 (Term 4), and conclude on Saturday 21 November. Further games will be played in Term 1, 2027.

Teams will generally play each Saturday morning, unless they have a bye in the fixture. Please note that there will be no sport on Saturday 31 October due to the Melbourne Cup weekend.

Teams will play at a central venue most weeks, with the Vermont Badminton Centre being the primary venue during Term 4.

Details regarding game times, arrival times, locations, transport arrangements and expected return times will be communicated to families via Clipboard by no later than 5.00pm each Thursday.

Basketball (Boys)

About

Basketball is played in the summer season of the AGSV Boys Competition (girls have the opportunity to choose basketball as part of the winter season of sport).

Training Venue Location

Sandringham Leisure Centre (King Club), 150 Tulip Street, Cheltenham 3192.

Students in Year 8 will be required to train at Jubilee Park, Frankston for the final 3 weeks of Term 3, 2026. They will then switch to Sandringham Leisure Centre for Term 4.

Equipment

Students are not required to provide any additional equipment for basketball. However, we recommend that all students bring a drink bottle to training and matches.

Uniform

  • Training: Mentone Grammar core PE uniform or basketball sport uniform.
  • Matches: Please refer to the Uniform Guide for basketball match uniform requirements. You will need to scroll to the relevant sport within the guide.

Saturday Sport Commitment

  • Match Times: Games run for approximately 50 minutes and may be scheduled at any time between 8.00am and 1.00pm on Saturdays. Match times vary from week to week, and students are unlikely to have the same starting time each round.
  • Travel: The AGSV determines the home and away fixture schedule. While efforts are made to provide an even balance of home and away matches, this is not always possible. Families should allow additional time for travel to away venues when required.

The Saturday sport fixture schedule will be published in Clipboard and the MyMentone parent app as soon as it becomes available.

Selection Criteria

Basketball is a popular summer sport and, in some year levels, the number of students selecting basketball may exceed the number of places available.

Students will participate in several selection sessions before the end of Term 3, with teams announced at the beginning of Term 4. Selection will take into account a student’s performance across these sessions, with the aim of placing students in the most appropriate team.

To ensure students receive appropriate playing opportunities and court time, basketball teams will generally be limited to a maximum of 10 players.

Years 7 & 8: Students are guaranteed their first-choice summer sport. Students who select basketball will therefore be placed in a basketball team.

Years 9 – 12: Every effort will be made to accommodate students who select basketball as their first-choice sport. However, if basketball is oversubscribed and all available teams are at capacity, some students may be required to move to their second-choice summer sport.

At this stage, we do not anticipate needing to move students to their second-choice sport. However, we want families to be aware of this possibility when making their selections. Any student who cannot be accommodated in basketball will be informed once the selection process has been completed and will be supported in moving to their second-choice sport.

Body Balance

About

Body Balance incorporates a mind body connection using slow, gentle movements, meditation and deep breathing. The class has been designed to improve balance, agility, strength, flexibility, stamina, and coordination. The mediation component of the class will help to calm the mind, improve concentration, and reduce anxiety.

Uniform and Equipment

Students participating in Body Balance are required to wear their full Mentone Grammar sports uniform to each session.

Students will also need to bring the following items to every Saturday session:

  • A yoga mat
  • A water bottle
  • A towel

Training Sessions

As part of the Body Balance program, students will walk with their coach to and from South Pacific Health Club, Mentone (Club Lime), where they will participate in a Body Balance session. The health club will provide the equipment required for this session.

Saturday Commitments

Students are expected to arrive at the Bayview Multipurpose Hall, Bayview Campus, by 8:20am for an 8:30am start. The Body Balance class will conclude at 9:30am.

Saturday sessions will commence on Saturday 24 October 2026 and run through to and including Saturday 21 November 2026.

Please note that there will be no session on Saturday 31 October due to the Melbourne Cup weekend.

Cricket

About

Cricket is played in the summer season of the AGSV Boys Competition and AGSV/APS Girls Competition.

Training Venue Location

Keysborough Playing Fields (756-768 Springvale Road, Braeside 3195)

Equipment

Students are expected to provide their own cricket equipment, including:

  • Cricket bat
  • Batting pads
  • Batting gloves
  • Helmet with face guard
  • Neck guard
  • Relevant protective equipment (e.g. abdominal protector/box)
  • Cricket footwear (recommended but not compulsory)
  • Hat
  • Drink bottle

Please note: A neck guard attached to the helmet is a compulsory item of protective equipment. Students must have an approved neck guard fitted to their helmet and wear it when batting.

Uniform

  • Training: Mentone Grammar core PE uniform or cricket sport uniform.
  • Matches: Please refer to the Uniform Guide for cricket match uniform requirements. You will need to scroll to the relevant sport within the guide.

Saturday Sport Commitment

  • Match Times: Matches commence at 8.30am and generally finish between 11.00am and 12.30pm, depending on the level of competition.
  • First XI: Match times and requirements for the First XI will differ. Players will be provided with these details separately.

Player Commitment

Students who select cricket are expected to be available for all scheduled Saturday matches throughout the season, except in exceptional circumstances.

Teams are generally entered with a maximum of 12 players and do not have a separate bench of reserve players. Consistent availability is therefore important to ensure teams can field a full side each week. Families should consider this commitment when selecting cricket as their summer sport.

Travel

Additional travel time will be required for away matches, depending on the venue.

The Saturday sport fixture schedule will be published in Clipboard and the MyMentone parent app as soon as it becomes available.

Golf

About

Students will complete their weekly training sessions on the driving range at Spring Valley Golf Club, developing their skills under the guidance of experienced coaches. The program focuses on improving technique, accuracy, and consistency across all aspects of the game, including driving and putting.

Term 4 Training

During Term 4, students will attend weekly practice sessions at Spring Valley Golf Club (619 Heatherton Road, Clayton South), with groups allocated as follows:

  • Years 7 & 8: Tuesday
  • Years 11& 12: Wednesday
  • Years 9 & 10: Thursday

Students will rotate through a range of practice areas, including:

  • Practice fairway
  • Bunker play
  • Chipping
  • Practice putting green

Note: on days of heavy rain, students will conduct a theory session indoors at Spring Valley Golf Club.

Saturday Morning Sport Commitment

We understand that many students are members of private golf clubs, but those who are not find it challenging accessing public golf courses on Saturday mornings.

We will therefore provide flexibility around playing times, however, all students participating in the Mentone Grammar Golf program are required to submit one 9-hole scorecard each week during the season.

The scorecard must be from either Sandringham Golf Club, or Cheltenham Golf Club, and must have a Mentone Grammar stamp on the card as evidence that the round has been completed.

If a student would prefer to play at another public course, or has access to a private golf course, this arrangement must be discussed and approved in advance by Robyn Cooper, Golf Coordinator, and Brenton Sanderson, Director of Sport.

Please note that failure to submit the required 9-hole scorecard will result in an after-school detention. There will be no warnings.

Equipment

Students cannot select Golf as their summer sport unless they own their own set of golf clubs.

Students are not permitted to share or borrow another student’s clubs on the day of training.

If a student arrives without their own golf equipment, they will not be permitted to participate in Golf that day and will instead attend the Body Balance session that afternoon.

Please ensure your child has an appropriate set of clubs before selecting Golf as their summer sport.

Golf Handicap & Victorian School Championships

As part of the students’ induction at Spring Valley Golf Club, they will be introduced to the process of obtaining an Australian-accredited golf handicap.

This will be an important part of the program, as we want students to develop the skills and knowledge to continue playing golf beyond their time at school.

At the conclusion of the summer season, four students will be eligible for selection in the Mentone Grammar Golf Team to compete at the Victorian School Championships in March 2027.

Selection will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Lowest accredited golf handicap.
  2. Training attendance of 80% or greater.
  3. Accurately submitted 9-hole scorecards throughout the season.

All three requirements must be satisfied to be eligible for selection.
