Winter Season

Saturday sport is compulsory for all students in Years 7 – 12.

Boys compete in the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) competition and girls in the combined AGSV/Associated Public Schools (APS) competition in both Summer and Winter sports.

Please find details of each sport below including training locations, equipment needed, uniform requirements and Saturday commitments. Note, some Firsts games may be held on Friday afternoons.

Winter Sport Training Days

Bus transport is provided from the School to all external venues for training sessions. Students train during Periods 5 & 6 on their allocated training day (see below). Depending on the sport, buses may depart from Lucerne Street, Venice Street, Warrigal Road or Como Parade.

Students should check the Clipboard app and/or Canvas for the exact session details. Those travelling by bus must arrive at the departure point by 1:05pm for a 1:15pm departure.

AFL/AFLW

About

AFL/AFLW is a combative, fast paced, skillful team competition combining endurance, skill, tackling and strategy. AFL/AFLW is played on an oval and requires students to be physically prepared for contact.

  • Football boots (no metal studs) and a mouthguard (both compulsory)
  • Padded headgear (optional)

Badminton (Boys)

About

Badminton is a racquet sport played indoors, where students rally a shuttlecock over a net, both in singles and in doubles.

  • Appropriate training shoes (e.g. indoor court shoes with non-marking gum rubber soles)

Basketball (Girls)

About

Basketball is a competitive team sport played indoors. The game is 5v5 on court with up to 5 substitutes which can be freely interchanged throughout the game. Basketball requires dribbling, passing and shooting skills, while encouraging team work and strategic thinking.  

Training Venue Location

Sandringham Leisure Centre (King Club), 150 Tulip Street, Cheltenham 3192.

  • Appropriate training shoes (e.g. basketball ‘hoop shoes’)

Saturday Sport Commitment

  • Match Times: Games run for approximately 50 minutes and may be scheduled anytime between 8.00am and 1.00pm on Saturdays. Please note that match times vary from week-to-week and it is unlikely your child will have the same starting time each round.
  • Travel: The AGSV determines the home and away schedule. While efforts are made to provide an accurate return time, this is not always possible. Additional time should be allowed for travel to away venues, as required.

Body Balance & Pilates

About

Body Balance incorporates a mind body connection using slow, gentle movements, meditation and deep breathing. The class has been designed to improve balance, agility, strength, flexibility, stamina, and coordination. The mediation component of the class will help to calm the mind, improve concentration, and reduce anxiety.

Training Venue

  • Club Lime, 86 – 88 Balcombe Road, Mentone
  • Students are required to meet outside the sport office at 1:30pm on training days and walk to the venue.

  • Location: One hour Mat Pilates/Yoga class at Mentone Grammar Bayview Multi-Purpose Hall.
  • Class Time: 8:30 – 9:30am

Cross Country

About

Cross country is a long-distance running sport conducted over varied terrain, with students competing both individually and contributing to overall team scores. Distances vary between 3km-5km.

Venue Location

  • Training: Mentone Playing Fields, Keysborough 
  • Saturday: Varied locations depending on the home and away fixture. All AGSV Schools host a cross country event throughout the season.

Hockey

About

Hockey is a fast paced team sport played outdoors on a synthetic pitch, with a hockey stick and a small hard ball. It requires high endurance. Players attack and defend, aiming to score goals while maintaining structure, team work and discipline.

Equipment

Students are expected to provide their own hockey equipment, including:

  • Appropriate training shoes (e.g. field hockey shoes or trail running shoes)
  • Hockey Stick
  • Mouthguard
  • Shin Pads
  • Water Bottle

Goal keepers will require additional padding (not sold at MG suppliers)

Indoor Climbing

About

Indoor climbing/bouldering is performed on shorter walls (3-5m high) with thick safety maps underneath. Students work individually and in teams to problem solve routes from start to finish points. Indoor climbing develops strength, coordination, problem-solving, resilience, and teamwork in a safe, supervised indoor environment.

Equipment

  • Appropriate closed-toe training shoes (students can wear climbing shoes if they have them but this is not essential)

  • Time:
    • Years 7 – 9: 8.00 – 9.00am
    • Years 10 – 12: 9.00 – 10.00am
  • Travel: Students are required to make their own way to and from the venue on Saturdays

Jiu-Jitsu (Self-Defence)

About

Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art focusing on technique, and control. The aim for students is to develop discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking in a safe, controlled environment.

Bayside Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 6 Bond St, Mordialloc 

Equipment & Uniform

  • Students can wear the Mentone Grammar core PE uniform. However, for optimal performance students may like to wear a Gi, which is the traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform. A Gi allows for grappling techniques that simulate real-life self-defence situations. These may be purchased at the venue and are not available from the School Uniform Shop. 
  • Water bottle

Netball (Girls)

About

Netball is a fast paced 7v7 team sport played either indoors or outdoors on a rectangular court. Emphasis is placed on passing, shooting and strategic positioning, as well as encouraging teamwork, communication, and tactical awareness.

  • Appropriate netball training shoes (e.g. netball court shoes or cross trainers)

Soccer

About

Soccer is played outdoors, 11v11 on a grass soccer pitch. We take a squad of up to 15 to allow substitutions. The game requires high endurance and teamwork, requiring basic foot skills and knowledge of the rules, including offside.

  • Soccer boots (grass – no metal studs) and shin guards (both compulsory)
  • Mouthguards are highly recommended (optional)
