Sport FAQs

This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about our sport programs.

1. Is sport compulsory or optional?

Participation in the AGSV/APS sport program is compulsory for all students in Years 7 – 12.

From Year 8 students can choose one season of the SMART program in lieu of one season of sport:

SMART Program

2. Are there different levels or teams (A/B/C teams)?

YES. For each level of competition, there are different team levels based on experience and skill.

3. How are teams selected? Are trials required each year?

YES. Students participate in sport trials which determine what team level they are initially placed in. Teams may be realigned in the first few weeks of the season as adjustments are made.

4. Can students play more than one sport?

YES. Students must compete in one sport per season (unless doing SMART program in lieu of sport).

However, there are additional non-compulsory sport options that take place at different times of the year.

Students should consider academic and other cocurricular commitments before participating in any additional sports.

5. Where do I find my team’s fixture?

All fixtures and session times can be found on the MyMentone parent app (Sport & Cocurricular tile).

Confirmed fixtures are available from 5.00pm every Thursday prior to each Saturday session.

6. Can I drive my child to the game?

YES. Parents are required to transport students to and from any home games.

For away games where a bus is provided by the School, we ask students to be dropped at School as per the information outlined in the MyMentone app (Sport & Cocurricular tile).

If a student is running late, or needs to be driven directly to the match, then parents can inform sport staff accordingly.

Parents are welcome to attend home and away fixtures, and we encourage attendance to show your support for our Mentone teams.

7. Can my child miss sport when they are behind in their academic commitments? Or if they have work?

NO. Saturday sport is compulsory. The Head of Campus can be contacted directly for special consideration; however, students must not miss Saturday sport for work commitments.

8. Can students move up teams during the season?

YES. Selection in teams is fluid, and a student may be asked to move up or down in grade depending on form and ability. Where possible, we will accommodate students seeking to play in friendship groups; however, please understand this is not always possible.

9. Who coaches the teams (teachers, external coaches, or professionals)?

Mentone Grammar employs more than 120 coaches. These coaches are a combination of external coaches (including alumni) and teachers. Alumni play an important role in our coaching program, often coaching our junior teams.

10. What qualifications do coaches have?

Each coach holds a Working With Children Check, basic First Aid qualifications, and will have completed the required AGSV/APS modules on child safety.

Coaches also hold a variety of sport specific qualifications depending on experience.

11. Is there a focus on skill development or competition? Are we trying to win or give every student equal game time?

We believe that every student deserves a positive experience in sport.

Our program is built on the principle that sport should be inclusive, engaging, and enjoyable, ensuring that all students, regardless of ability or experience, feel valued and supported. Creating environments where students can challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop a lifelong appreciation for their sport is central to our philosophy.

At the highest level, our Firsts teams proudly pursue excellence, striving for premiership success each season. With this ambition comes a commitment to high standards, strong preparation, and a culture of accountability and performance. Students representing these teams are expected to embrace these expectations and contribute to a competitive, team-first environment.

Depending on the sport, Mentone Grammar enters A-level teams that reflect this same commitment. However, we are equally committed to ensuring that success is not achieved at the expense of our core values.

We firmly believe in fairness and opportunity, and as such, we prioritise equal and appropriate playing time for all students, ensuring that every participant has the chance to contribute, improve, and feel a genuine sense of involvement.

12. What uniforms or equipment are required?

Students are required to be in the correct AGSV/APS sport uniform for all matches. See the Sport Uniform Guide for uniform and equipment requirements.

13. Are scholarships or support available?

NO. Mentone Grammar does not offer any sports scholarships or bursaries. If you do have any financial questions or concerns, please contact the School’s Director of Business.

14. Who pays medical costs for injuries? Is the school covered with insurance?

Under the School’s Enrolment Policy, the responsibility for medical costs depends on the circumstances of the injury.

Clause 16.5 explains that… to the extent permitted by law, parents release the School and its staff from claims relating to a child’s personal illness or injury that occurs during their enrolment, except where a significant illness or injury is caused by negligent or reckless conduct by the School or its representatives.

To support this, the School encourages parents to maintain appropriate health insurance to ensure their child/ren can access any medical treatment they may need as a result of participating in sport, whether during training or competition.

The School is committed to supporting students’ overall wellbeing and safety in all sporting activities. Should a student experience an injury or require additional support, we will review the School policies and each situation on a case‑by‑case basis and, where appropriate, advise families of available insurance coverage, wellbeing services, and any other support options the School can provide.

15. What happens if my child gets a concussion?

Mentone Grammar is committed to following current, evidence-based protocols to support students and staff in the event of a suspected concussion, whether at school or during a sporting activity.

If your child sustains a suspected concussion while participating in Mentone Grammar sport, a member of our Sports Team and/or Health Centre will contact you. You will be asked to seek medical attention and have the treating practitioner complete the School’s Medical Diagnosis Form (linked below).

Please email the completed form to the Mentone Grammar Health Centre regardless of the diagnosis: staff-nurses@mentonegrammar.net

If a concussion is diagnosed:

  • Your child must be symptom-free for at least 14 days at rest before seeking medical clearance.
  • A medical practitioner must complete Section 2 of the Medical Clearance Form to confirm clearance.
  • The completed form must be returned to the Health Centre.

Return to sport:

  • Once your child has been symptom-free for a minimum of 14 days and at least 21 days have passed since the injury, a return-to-sport plan can be developed.
  • The plan will be agreed upon by the School’s Concussion Officer (Health Centre and Risk Team) together with the student and their parent/carer.
  • A further medical assessment is not required at this stage.

Concussions outside of school: Please inform the School of any concussion sustained outside of school activities, so appropriate care and academic adjustments can be provided.

16. Is there strength and conditioning (S&C) support?

YES. Students in Years 7 – 12 have access to the Mentone Grammar Fitness Gym which offers dedicated Strength & Conditioning Sessions with professional coaches.
