ELC: PRE-PREP (4YO)
Within the Mary Jones ELC, our Pre-Prep children use play to build their language skills and learn about numbers and patterns.
They also learn how to socialise, share, list, and manage their emotions with other students. Teachers and coeducators assist the children in becoming curious, and creative about learning.
Swimming is a compulsory part of our Pre-Prep Physical Education program.
- Timing: Term 3
- Location: Mentone Aquatic Centre
Swimming Uniform: students can choose to wear the Mentone Grammar swim wear, but this is not compulsory, and they can wear their own bathers/swim shorts.

Pre-Prep students have a library lesson each week. We foster regular borrowing of library books and appreciate good care and timely return.
- Children will need a named Mentone Grammar library bag.
- Children MUST bring their library bag to the library lesson to be able to borrow on the day.
- Please make sure you check your child’s timetable.
Children participate in The Resilience Project, a fun, evidence-based program that supports the wellbeing of the entire ELC community. Grounded in the principles of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM) and Emotional Literacy, the program helps children develop lifelong wellbeing skills, strengthens educator resilience, and empowers families to support wellbeing at home.
Cosy Koala is always a highlight within the curriculum.
Our sports program is delivered by our dedicated classroom teachers and is designed to build strong foundations for early physical development. Each week, children take part in engaging gross and fine motor activities that support the development of early sports skills. Through a variety of structured and play-based experiences, children develop coordination, balance, and strength while learning key movement skills such as crossing the midline, throwing overarm and underarm, running, jumping, and participating in team-based activities. The program promotes confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.
Children engage in numeracy and literacy learning through both teacher-initiated experiences and play-based opportunities. Our ELC literacy program is enriched through PreLit, aligned with the Junior School’s MultiLit approach.
PreLit is an evidence-based, systematic early literacy preparation program developed by MultiLit. It supports children’s development of phonological awareness and oral language through structured, engaging, game-like lessons, along with storybook and mat-time experiences.
